#WOOSHAPPROVED: ALL-TIME FAVE SUN PROTECTIVE MUST-HAVES
Summer’s great for the spirit; not so much for your skin and hair. In fact, UV radiation is an absolute devil when it comes to the health of your skin, accounting for somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of all external signs of aging – in other words, wrinkles and dark spots. And your hair? Well, UV weakens the structure of your precious locks making it prone to dryness, breakage and dull-looking strands. It also fades color and may even cause temporary hair loss if you’re not super careful.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Thankfully, we’ve figured out many ways to protect ourselves from the savage onslaughts of the sun, while still enjoying plenty of much-needed outdoor time.
Keep scrolling for our all-time favorites.
The Daily Face Protection
Ask any dermatologist for their number one recommendation for warding off the visible signs of aging, and we’d bet our neighbor’s cat that the answer would be sunscreen (followed swiftly by retinol and a good moisturizer.) But we get it, an extra step in your morning skincare routine can seem like a real bore. We also used to feel that way. Until we found Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen with SPF 36 and never looked back. Lightweight, and with a subtle hint of color that suits most skin types, Woosh content writer, Georgia, applies this literally every morning without fail (*pats self on back!).
The Statement Sun Hat
Baseball caps are all well and good but sometimes you just want to look less like you’re heading to a ball game, right? For those occasions, grab this stunning Watskin Sienna Hat in Multi Floral. Not only does it have a fabulously wide brim to protect your entire face and neck (unlike a regular peaked cap) but it’s also made with UPF 50+ fabric. Similar to the SPF rating of your sunscreen, UPF measures how much a fabric is able to block UV radiation from hitting (and damaging!) your skin. And, ps, a rating of 50, is excellent. Watskin also donates a portion of every sale to the Melanoma Research Alliance. Bonus points, right there.
The Beach Lust-Have
Did you not get the memo? Beach umbrellas are so 2020! And frankly why would you even go there when this Premium Beach Tent is an option? Available in seven different colors, this eco-friendly beach tent from Business & Pleasure Co. gives you around six feet of shade and neatly packs into a cute matching canvas carry bag to easily get you from home/car to the beach and back again without breaking your back. It’s also UPF 50, World Forestries registered and on sale for half price right now. Best get in quick!
The Can’t-Go-Wrong Sunscreen
If, like us, you hate applying thick, heavy sunscreen that, even after a ten-minute arm workout, still leaves you with a weird, white cast of residue on your skin, we have one word for you: don’t. Because quite honestly there’s no need. Sunscreens have come on leaps and bounds since the 1970s and should now be a pleasure to use and simple to apply. Still searching for ‘the one’? Then follow in the footsteps of Woosh Founder and CEO, Andrea who swears by Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. Clear, lightweight, non-greasy and fast-absorbing it seems too good to be true. But, take our word for it, it isn't!
The Makeup With Extras
Did you know, all of the products in our Woosh Fold Out Face Refillable Palette – Foundation, Blush, Concealers, Shimmers, Contour Powders, even our Eye Shadows – contain titanium dioxide? So what, you may ask. Well, titanium dioxide is a mineral sunscreen that naturally protects you from damaging UVA and UVB radiation by reflecting them away from the surface of your skin. Of course, makeup can never replace a good coating of daily sunscreen because, well, it doesn’t contain quite the same levels of protection. However, if you want peace of mind that you’re giving your skin a little bit extra, then why not? Our good-for-skin formulations also contain antioxidants like vitamins C and E for extra free radical protection.
The Buttery Soft Beach Top
If you have extremely sun sensitive skin, spend a lot of time on the water or want to make absolute sure your skin is safe from harm, you will love this SunDays Rays Long Sleeve Mockneck Top from Left On Friday. Unlike many sun protective tops this baby is actually pretty cute. Sure, the hot pink color helps (it also comes in five other shades) but it also fits well without feeling too skin tight and, while it has a UPF of 50, feels surprisingly lightweight and dries super fast. Clever.
The Hair Helper
Let’s be honest, there are plenty of hair protective creams, sprays and lotions out there, but why risk something that’s not that great when you can invest in this creamy, water-resistant mask from hair guru, Philip Kingsley. Originally developed to help protect the hair of the first ever US Olympic synchronized swim team (and if that’s not a great endorsement, we don’t know what is!) Philip Kingsley Swimcap protects your hair from the sun, chlorine and salt water, keeping it soft, bouncy, shiny and nourished. Got a summer vacay planned? Then this is one product you do not want to leave at home.
The Shape Of Shades To Come
Oversized sunnies and Top Gun-style aviators are always on-trend but it’s nice to see micro, oval-shaped frames making a comeback this year. And founder, Andrea is a definite fan. Andrea loves her collection of sunglasses – it’s quite the collection, btw! – and these Le Specs Work It! Sunglasses have seen some major action already this summer. With biscuit-colored frames they’re the perfect neutral tone for your entire summer wardrobe.
The Protector Of Lips
Hands up if you frequently overlook your lips when slathering up with SPF for a day in the sun. Not ideal. In fact, scratch that, it’s a terrible idea. How so? Well, the skin on your lips is extremely susceptible to sun damage because it’s significantly thinner than the rest of your face and body. Furthermore, your lips don't produce sebum to help moisturize and protect them from UV radiation which makes them vulnerable to premature aging. This is why we always throw a Supergoop! Play Lip Balm with SPF 30 in our beach tote – alongside a trusty Spin-On Lip Gloss for lunchtime glam ups, of course! A person needs choices, after all.
